Application Worksheet

SAR Bylaws state, “Any male shall be eligible for membership in the SAR who is a citizen of good repute in the community and a lineal descendant of an ancestor who was at all times unfailing in loyalty to and rendered acceptable service in the cause of American Independence”. Proving bloodline line descent, whether legitimate or illegitimate, from a patriot ancestor to yourself is what is required for SAR membership and is what must be documented. Membership is not restricted on the basis of race, age, color, religion, national origin, nation of citizenship or residency.

Applying for membership in SAR is a four step process as presented HERE:

• Determine eligibility,
• Find a local contact,
• Collect your data, and
• Start your application.

Please note that family traditions as to the services of an ancestor will not suffice as appropriate documentation of lineage. Family history volumes that aren’t annotated to cite recognized documents and/or sources are not sufficient and can possibly delay the application’s approval. No summary or preliminary ruling will be given on a line of descent, service, or evidentiary value of proposed documentation before all submitted information has been vetted.
