About Us

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), founded in 1889, is a historical, educational, and patriotic nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that seeks to maintain and extend

  • the institutions of American freedom,
  • an appreciation for true patriotism,
  • a respect for our national symbols,
  • the value of American citizenship, and
  • the unifying force of an E pluribus unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people.

As one of the largest male societies in the country, SAR boasts tens of thousands of active members in over 550 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any male 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove blood lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.

Our Athens Chapter was organized on November 9, 1936, in Athens, Georgia, with local attorney Robert Russell Gunn elected as the Chapter’s first President. Other original members included Steadman Vincent Sanford, University of Georgia President for whom Sanford Stadium is named, and Dr. Robert Cumming Wilson, Sr., after whom the Pharmacy Building at the University of Georgia is named.

We are one of the largest SAR chapters in Georgia, with 70+ members. Our members represent a wide range of ages, as well as varied personal and professional backgrounds. We are bound together as descendants of Patriots with a love of Country and a commitment to the ideals set forth by our Founding Fathers.

Our Chapter serves the counties of Clarke, Greene, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and a portion of Jackson. We generally meet the first Tuesday of each month with exceptions being the months of June-August when we break for summer, and the month of February when we meet on Presidents Day to celebrate George Washington’s Birthday. We welcome visitors and potential new members that share our values and focus.
